‘I know how fiction matters to me, because if I want to express myself, I have to make up a story. Some people call it imagination. To me, it’s not imagination. It’s just a way of watching.’
Some inspiring quotes on writing from Haruki Murakami.
Life, fiction & other unrealities
Murakami has a way of putting things that make me go, “YESSS!” I wrote a whole post on some of my favorite Murakami running quotes in a post – they struck me so much they got a whole dedicated post
Doesn’t he just! I remember reading your post. Murakami’s passion for running was partly the reason I thought about taking up the activity — I’m still thinking about it — and your blog inspires me to think further. Maybe next New Year’s resolution will endure, and I’ll finally put my sneakers on the pavement. 😉
Awesome! Some very smart writer once told me, “Slow and steady wins the race” and he is spot on 😉 And I love the way Murakami puts it “I’m no great runner, by any means. I’m at an ordinary – or perhaps more like mediocre – level. But that’s not the point. The point is whether or not I improved over yesterday. In long-distance running the only opponent you have to beat is yourself, the way you used to be.” That Murakami – has some great thoughts on running and writing!
I think it was Aesop who said that 😉 That’s a wonderfully inspiring quote too. And yes, I like how Murakami’s quotes often seem transferable to both writing and running — they are both arduous journeys at times I guess that require a lot of pushing through the pain.
